Figure & Ground: Seeing the Figure in its Architectural Space All levels Welcome

This painting class explores the relationship
between figures, forms and their architectural setting. Masters
such as Degas, Seurat, Hopper and Vermeer created strong interplay
between these elements. Some classes will work with a model other
classes with still life. Students may use charcoal, pastels, oils,
or the medium of their choice.

From Flowers and Still Life All levels Welcome

This course investigates approaches to representational drawing and painting using fresh flowers, vegetable and fruit forms as well as various still life objects. By way of classical drawing exercises using line and tone, composition and the construction of volume and mass, instruction centers on working from observation to create the illusion of three-dimensional form and space.

Lunch
and Landscape Beginner and Intermediate
Instructor: Helena Pittman
Bring your lunch and we will paint and sketch on the beautiful Museum grounds and gardens. Use watercolor, acrylics, pastels or any other medium of your choice. Bring a camera to take photographs to be used as reference when the weather does not permit working outdoors. Bring sketch materials to the first class and we will discuss additional supplies.
Students of all levels will enjoy the beauty of working as a classical fine art sculptor from nude models or still life studies which are all classical Greek or Renaissance reproductions. While European techniques and materials are encouraged, students are welcome to create modern, abstract sculptures. You will learn to work using additive and subtractive methods as well as finishing techniques such as model making, mould making, casting and surface finishing.

Learning
to Paint the Figure All Levels Welcome
Instructor: Galen Pittman
This course offers vigorous one-on-one instruction focusing on
representing the figure in terms of value, color, and painting
technique. Instructor brings a unique approach to seeing volumes,
motion and structure of the figure and head while guiding students
in their own direction. Students will work in the paint medium
of their choice.

Students are encouraged to select and explore their own choice
of media and subject matter and to develop their own personal
style. Assisted by one-on-one instruction in their project, students
will have an artistically enjoyable experience while learning
technical and expressive fundamentals of painting.
Explore the potential of the medium of the colored pencil. Study
texture, values, shading and shadows while learning about color.
Personalized instruction fits the needs of beginning and continuing
students.
Watercolor:
Landscape & the Figure Intermediate - Advanced
Instructor: Steven Lampasona
Learn to see with an artist’s eye and communicate your
vision through the painting process. Exploration of this marvelously
fluid and direct painting medium will take place on the Museum’s
grounds when the weather permits.
Learn a new way of seeing in order to develop the necessary skills
to successfully work from the figure. Important elements such
as gesture, mass and structure will be addressed. Personal instruction
will be available for beginners and intermediate students. Materials
will be discussed at the first class
Students will learn the basic elements of drawing the human head
in different poses from a live model. Charcoal and pastels will
be used to learn shading and highlighting. Individual attention
will be given at all levels. Bring charcoal sticks, pencils, kneaded
eraser, 14 X 18 (or larger) charcoal pad to first class
Painting I aims at the development of painting skills, techniques,
value transitions and contrasts, color harmony, brush handling
and composition. The goal is a greater freedom, openness and expressiveness
in oil or acrylic paints. The subject matter will be taken from
life and resource materials. Emphasis will be on individual development,
and the perception and translation of form and color.
For students with prior experience in drawing and would like to
hone their skills by focusing on color value through the use of
pastel. Emphasis placed on color, mass, composition, process,
in relation to the development of individual vision and expression.
Students will explore various techniques and solve a range of
artistic problems. Works of Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, and contemporary
artist Sally Strand will be examined.
This series of classes may increase your chances for art school
admissions. Build perceptual skills and a visual vocabulary in
drawing and basic design. Instruction in basic drawing and design
skills, various techniques, and handling of tools. Individualized
instruction and counseling in developing personal themes and advice
on the presentation and preparation of your portfolio.
The model will assume one long pose. Students work independently.

Writing
Down Your Life: Memoirs All levels Welcome
Instructor: Helena Pittman
Using our memories, our family stories and our histories
for material, we’ll explore the short story, chapter writing,
and free verse poetry. By the end of the session, each participant
will have a collection of memoiristic writings, as an end in itself
or as a beginning of a larger work. Helena Clare Pittman is a
writer/illustrator of children’s books and magazine stories
and is currently working on a memoir of her childhood, parts of
which have been published in CRICKET Magazine. Please bring your
notebook, your pen, and the wealth of history you carry inside.

NCMA RESERVES THE RIGHT TO CANCEL ANY CLASS DUE TO INSUFFICIENT REGISTRATION! In this case a full refund will be given to all students in the cancelled class. Any students who choose to cancel a class prior to the first meeting will be subject to a $20 handling fee. NO REFUNDS WILL BE ISSUED AFTER THE FIRST CLASS FOR ANY REASON! Students missing classes will not receive a refund or credit. Classes will be rescheduled for sessions due to bad weather or instructor’s absence.
