Event:

Rape of Europa
Film Screening, supported by Menemsha Films
Saturdays and Sundays at 2 pm

Date: May 24 through September 7
Time: 2:00 pm

Each weekend at 2 pm, throughout the showing of Iris Apfel: Rare Bird of Fashion, NCMA will screen Rape of Europa, Lynn Nicholas’ new film that documents the Nazis’ looting of the art treasures of Europe.

Avaricious looters, the Nazis stole perhaps one fifth of all of Europe’s art, destroying much of it prior to their ultimate defeat. Nicholas’ film shows how the Nazis accomplished these thefts and also documents the heroism of those who fought them, by hiding art during the war to recovering it in the post-war years. The Nazis may have long since been defeated but the theme of Rape of Europa remains relevant as valiant efforts are being made to restore art works to their rightful owners.

This screening, free with museum admission, takes place in the museum’s Library every Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm. No reservations are needed.

Exhibition Tour by Franklin Hill Perrell

Date:

Wednesday, July 9

Time:

6 pm (tour) & 7 pm (panel discussion)

Four prominent Long Island art collectors - one an admirer of the Impressionists, two with interests in modernism and contemporary art, and another who specializes in the Hudson River School - discuss how and why they collect. Why specialize or collect across the board? How to develop resources and contacts within the art market? How to uncover hidden treasures? And finally, how do they find and snap up the new hot thing before it becomes impossibly expensive? The discussion is moderated by Constance Schwartz, the museum's director.

Prior to the panel discussion, Chief Curator Franklin Hill Perrell will lead participants on a private tour of the current exhibition.

Fee: Admission for the discussion and tour is $15 (nonmembers, $25) and includes admission to the museum and refreshments.
