Charles A. Riley II, PhD., a favorite lecturer with museum visitors and a valued contributor to our exhibition catalogues, presents The Elusive Ladies of Impressionism, an illustrated discussion of the creation of the “Modern Woman” by the great Impressionists—Degas, Monet, Renoir, Vuillard and others—which, according to Dr. Riley, was a matter of both style and social innovation. In this multimedia salon, Dr. Riley introduces us to the historical figures behind the portraits and compares them with the era’s heroines of opera, literature and the dramatic stage. The Elusive Ladies of Impressionism is being offered in conjunction with our current exhibition, The Subject is Women: Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.
