RICHARD HUNT:
Europa Hybrid

Hunt's hybrids sometimes wieild threatening jagged edges - like "Sparrow Hill" - and sometimes sweep gracefully upward as if straining toward the sky - like "Europa Hybrid" - but the paradoxical combinations are always fascinating and eloquent. Besides his lifelong interest in biology, techonoly, and history, Hunt also acknowledges the influence of Picasso and the drawing-in-space, direct-metal, open-form sculpturing of Julio Gonzalez and David Smith. "You can create volumes and space within space, which gives you a broad opportunity for expression," says Hunt. Large-scale public comissions now constitute about 70 percent of his work. With 30 public sculptures in Chicago alone, Hunt has been cited by Smithsonian magazine as the "outstanding artist of public sculpture in Chicago, the Midwest, and points south."
