PEOPLE:
Lumberjack - Red Grooms
Nashville-born, New York based sculptor and artist whose work
stems from the Pop Art tradition of realistic figures and situations,
also known for his films, assemblages, and "happenings".
"Lumberjack", with its humor, attention to detail, theactricality,
exaggerated realism, and fascination with scale - from large to
small - are all typical of Groom's style, whether flat, 3-d, or
in between. Although the lumberjack appears to be made of real
wood, both natural and finished, the wood has actually been cast
into bronze, the kind of visual trick and verbal pun beloved by
Grooms. The lumberjack, who appears to have been assembled from
scraps of wood, grasps his long pike-pole as he balances on a
log, floating in a highly stylized, extremely undersized, body
of water.
