Fernando Botero: Works on Paper
Exclusive Showing of Works by Latin America's
Most Famous Living Artist
November 14, 2004 through February 13, 2005
This original exhibition marks the first time anywhere in the
world that Fernando Botero's personal collection of his works--more
than 70 pieces in all--is on public exhibition. We are extremely
proud to have been chosen by Botero as the venue for this significant
exhibition of personal works by an artist whom many have ranked
with Kahlo and Rivera as the most famed and important of Latin
masters.
Botero was born in Colombia and has resided most recently in
New York and Paris. He achieved renown beginning in the 1960s
for his figural portrayals that explore the human condition through
themes spanning politics, history, romance and the family. The
roundness and volume of Botero's figures derive from his studies
of how the palpability of flesh and figure were first explored
by Giotto, Mantegna, Rubens and others. His commitment was and
is to represent the figure and the human condition--Woman: The
Eternal Female and Man: The Great Male.
The body of work on display at NCMA in Fernando Botero: Works
on Paper conveys a panorama of Botero's interests through the
intimate media of pencil, charcoal, watercolor and sanguine. Together,
these works express a unique vision, that of Fernando Botero.
Fernando Botero: Works on Paper is sponsored by Fortunoff with
addtional support from Marlborough Gallery, New York; Bobbi and
Mel Weiss, Utopia Home Care, Inc., and Astoria Federal Savings.

SECOND FLOOR GALLERIES
Latin Visions: A Collector's Insights
November 14 through February 13
NCMA now manages an important private collection of 20th-Century
Latin Art. These holdings are so large that its many superb works
will have to be featured over a period of time. In Latin Visions:
A Collector's Insights, the first of these exhibitions based on
the collection, we will begin to explore the depth and richness
of the collection and of the themes and issues to be found in
contemporary Latin art. Among the many mid-century to current
artists are the Surrealist masters Lam and Matta and many contemporary
trendsetters, among them Colunga, Azceta, Varejao, Muniz and others.

IN THE CONTEMPORARY GALLERY
